Realness, Running

Two steps back….or ten

I’m so unfit!  Remember the Angela that worked out 6 sometimes 7 times a week? She’s gone, the last two months have dragged her down in a multitude of sins including  her returning old friend the chocolate addiction, a lack of love for the grey skies and colder weather, a mild chest infection and a crazy love for her twin baby nieces (sometimes she skips the gym for baby cuddles).

Yup it’s true, the gym has found its way to the bottom of my priority list, don’t get me wrong I’ve been going but maybe only once or twice a week at most and let me tell you I am feeling the effects.  My clothes don’t fit as comfortably and I’ve lost almost all my muscle definition (abs are definitely gone)**sad face. So much work to gain them and so little time to lose them.

A random Facebook chat about the Marathon I am running in May found me agreeing to go to a local running club on Saturday with a couple of people I know who are also in training.  We were told they run at a steady pace of roughly 9 and half minute miles, had ran 5miles the week before and were planning on adding on one mile every week for the next few weeks before increasing the pace.

My training so far has been almost non existent, a few 5ks and the odd 4miler here and there.  I really needed a kick up the butt so thought with a group to keep me motivated I could struggle my way through this 6miles.  Except we got there and they had actually planned an 8 mile route….eeek….. Mandy who leads the group gave us a little pep talk and told us if it felt too much at any time we could head back to the shop (where we met) but I mean who wants to be the one to turn back, how embarrassing?!

ERM, that would be me!

I started to struggle around the 4 mile mark, I blamed my breathing, then I blamed my calves but in all honesty it was my head.  I stopped.  I shouldn’t stop.  Mandy saw that I’d tailed away from the pack so she came and ran with me, encouraging me, keeping me going for another mile or so before I finally gave in and jogged the final mile back to the shop while the pack took a 2 mile detour.  I was the only one not to complete the route, how embarrassing.  I was so annoyed with myself, for letting my head beat me and for letting my fitness levels slip so drastically.

I hope I can get back on track in time to get some proper training in for the marathon but at the moment I really feel miles away **pun intended.

I think its time to bring back my Sunday Runday posts to keep me on track.

If you have no interest in my running ability or rather lack of.   Here’s a few snaps of what I’ve been doing instead of going to the gym the last couple of months….

Cocktails and sister lunch dates in Glasgow….

Drunken nights with friends in Edinburgh…

Ice cream runs…

More cocktails

Burgers..

Binge watching all 4 seasons of Ray Donovan…

Partying in Fee’s gym…

Champagne to celebrate the end of race season and the boy winning the championship…

Family celebrations…

Cinema dates… TROLLS was so good!!

But mostly I’ve been having nights in sharing cuddles with this gorgeous little pair…

As you can see my diet has taken a nose dive too!  Maybe time to go easy on the treats!?
Have you ever let yourself slip out of your health and fitness routine?

How do you find motivation to get back into your routine?

Thanks for reading 😊

Have a great day ❤️

  1. Looks like you had a ton of fun. And I”m sorry but fun is more important than spending time at the gym–which smells like sweat and dirty feet. I’m on a weight loss “journey”. Since the beginning of September I’ve dropped 13 pounds by eating sensibly. Sometimes it sucks because I just want to motorboat a chocolate cake. Sometimes it sucks because I want a large bowl of pasta drizzled with olive oil and topped with cheese and sometimes I just want an entire baguette slathered with Nutella. The payoff? My clothes are fitting and I’m back down to the single-digit clothing size. The gym is overrated. Your fun times are much better!

    1. Omg a baguette slathered with Nutella would be so perfect right now, with a side of chocolate cake!
You are right I’ve had lots of fun and having fun is more important that forcing the exercise but I do feel kinda rubbish not being able to do a run that was no problem at the start of the year!!!
You’ve dropped 13pounds since the beginning of September!!!!!!! What!!!! that’s amazing, well done you for fighting those thoughts of motor boating chocolate cake, now if you could send some of your motivation this way I’d be ever so grateful!
Back to smelly sweat infested gym for me!

  2. Sorry to hear that you feel like you’ve taken two steps back. I think that as long as you’re still trying to be a better version of you, you’re doing great and from all the pictures, it looks like you’re doing super well. Whenever I feel like I’ve fallen off the running wagon and have eaten super badly, I just press reset (not literally of course). Mentally, I press reset and I find it really helpful. It prevents myself from being too critical of myself and reminds me that we’re all just human. I like reading about other people’s excitement on running and that usually does the trick. Good luck! 🙂

  3. My friends and I were just talking about this the other day: how long it takes to get in shape and how fast it can go away! I do think your reasons for taking a break are good reasons…family, friends and fun. My favorite F words 😊 Good luck on your journey back to running. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ve got this 😘

  4. You’ll get back on it! There’s also muscle memory so it’ll take you a shorter time to regain all that strength.

Wow, everyone dresses so stylish haha. At least you had a good time enoying yourself! That’s what counts haha.

I’ve been trying to find the motivation to work out and eat better but I’ve been failing haha. With work, scool, and a dog, I just barely have time anymore.

    1. I hope you’re right!
I know I shouldn’t feel guilty about having a good time!
I just got thrown right of my routine when I was staying at my sisters to help with the babies and just couldn’t get back into it!! Puppies are hard work probably as much as a baby!!!

  5. The pics are so full of FUN.
I don’t think its bad if you don’t workout everyday. There should be atleast 2 days in the week, that you enjoy with no workouts.
Life is all about Living Happily. If you feel Happy cooking, hanging out with Friends, WHY NOT ?
Yes, but it is necessary to workout atleast 5 days in a week.
